In addition to celebrating Sacramento poetry with a variety of events, the week is also meant to highlight other important aspects of poetry and those who make it, including education, mental health and opportunities.

2024’s inaugural Sacramento Poetry Week celebrated the power of words to connect, inspire, and uplift our community. Over the course of a week, poets of all ages and backgrounds filled the city with spoken word performances, open mics, and unique programs like Pay with a Poem, which allowed Sacramento residents to ride Regional Transit and visit The Crocker Art Museum by simply sharing a poem. From the vibrant gatherings at local venues to the impactful Poetry Ride on our light rail lines, each event honored the rich tapestry of voices that make Sacramento unique.

As we look toward the future, Sacramento Poetry Week aims to grow even further, with plans to expand bilingual programming, deepen mental health support for poets, and engage more youth through school partnerships and citywide contests. This first year is only the beginning of a lasting tradition that will continue to build community, foster creativity, and bring poetry into every corner of Sacramento.
